A chin jab or a palm heel strike, is a close-combat technique where the heel of the palm is used to strike the chin of the opponent. This technique is found in almost all forms of martial arts. It may be used for striking, or pushing, or for setting up clinches and takedowns.

Types of chin jabs
The chin jab may have several types, like in boxing it is an uppercut; in kung fu it is a tiger claw; while in karate it is a taisho uchi. The nomenclature varies in different martial arts; however, the methodology of the chin jab is almost the same in every one of them.
Few popular chin jabs are:
—knock-out chin jab
—knock-down chin jab
——holding + chin jab
—single hand chin jab
—double hand chin jab
—side chin jab
—chin jab + eye poking + knee strike
Knock-out chin jab
Here, a strike is executed. The palm moves forcefully in an upward motion and strikes the chin of the opponent with the intention of knocking out the opponent. If executed with sufficient force, it can result in a knockout and makes the opponent fall to the ground in an unconscious state. In boxing, since gloves are worn, the chin jab is performed with a fist, and it is known as an uppercut.

Knock-down chin jab
Here, a push is executed. The palm moves in an upward direction, but with lesser force, so that it does not strike but rather pushes the chin of the opponent. Pushing is done so that the head of the opponent is suddenly moved backwards, which results in a loss of balance for the opponent and the fight is taken to the ground. However, if a greater force is applied than a knock-down becomes a knock-out chin jab.

Holding + chin jab
A variation of knock down chin jab is holding plus a chin jab. Here, a push-pull is executed. One hand holds and pulls the opponent while the other hand pushes and performs a chin jab. Holding is generally done by either holding the back, the shoulder, or an arm of the opponent. The hand holding the back, or the shoulder pulls the opponent forward, while the chin jab pushes the chin backward. This push-pull creates a loss of balance, and the opponent falls to the ground. If the arm is held, then it can be held either in an underhook or an overhook, and the held arm is pulled forward while the chin jab pushes the opponent backward. Normally, the idea is to create a loss of balance and take the fight to the ground, so that the held arm can be used in a submission move.

Single hand chin jab
Here, only one palm is used for striking (knock-out) or pushing (knock-down). The heel of the palm comes up under the chin of the opponent. As it comes under the chin, it is hidden from the vision of the opponent and thus, there is no telegraphing.

Double hand chin jab
Here, both the palms are used. This is more effective in pushing and knocking down the opponent, rather than striking and knocking out the opponent.

Side chin jab
Here, either a single hand or a double hand chin jab is performed, but from the side and not underneath the chin. As the elbow of the jabbing palm is raised and visible, hence a side chin jab is easily telegraphed, and the effectiveness is also lesser than a hidden jab coming surprisingly from under the chin. However, if sufficient force is applied, then any hit to the head area, from the front, back, side, or under, may result in a knockout.

Chin jab + eye poking + knee strike
Here, the heel of the palm strikes the chin. This can be combined with the fingers poking the eyes. This again can be combined with a knee strike either to the groin or the abdomen.

Conclusion
In close range, a chin jab or a palm heel strike is extremely effective and if combined with other movements it can be devastating. Therefore, any hit to the head area or the groin are normally not allowed in martial arts training schools. While training, one should be careful to not get injured or injure others. The reason being that all martial arts are taught with the aim of self-defense, physical fitness, and overall well-being. The aim is never to start or get into a fight, and a fight should always be avoided. Nonetheless, a chin jab or palm heel strikes may be employed for self-defense purposes, so that while the attacker is in a state of temporary shock, one can successfully manage to run away to safety.
