In every culture, the values give rise to norms, customs and traditions. These traditions keep the culture alive and promote love, fraternity and harmony in society. The traditions associated with Christmas in various countries have a mix of pre-Christian, Christian, with secular origins and themes. Popular holiday traditions include completing an Advent calendar or Advent wreath; gift giving; Christmas caroling and music; exchanging Christmas cards; attending church services; viewing a Nativity play; watching Christmas movies; enjoying a special meal; and displaying various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, nativity scenes, Christmas lights, mistletoe, wreaths, garlands, and holly.

In martial arts also, there are several traditions, with each martial art having its own respective traditions. One common tradition found in almost all martial arts is the tradition of bowing.

Another tradition, although ancient Japanese, is to keep one’s honour intact by not bearing the shame of defeat. This is done by winning, and if winning is not possible then accepting death rather than defeat. This tradition was exemplified in the ancient Japanese samurai culture of what was known as “seppuku (cutting stomach)”. Seppuku is also known as “kappuku (split stomach), or “hara-kiri (stomach cutting)”, and all of these although having minor differences, signify a form of Japanese ritualistic suicide by cutting the belly.

If a samurai sees that his defeat is imminent then the victor gives an honourable chance to the defeated, so that the defeated can slice his own belly open by plunging a short blade in the belly. The blade is voluntarily pierced on the left side and dragged from left to right. If the cut is deep enough, it can slice off the abdominal aorta, causing death by rapid loss of blood. This act is known as hara-kiri or kappuku. This act enabled the defeated to keep his honour intact by dying rather than accepting defeat.

Slicing the belly and dying due to loss of blood is known as hara-kiri. Hara-kiri may or may not be followed by the cutting off of the head. If the head is sliced off then hara-kiri becomes what is known as seppuku. In a battle, the victor gives an honourable chance to the defeated to perform hara-kiri. Thereafter, the victor slices off the head of the defeated and keeps his own honour intact by establishing his win in the fight. The victor also displays the tradition of showing mercy, as the act of slicing off the head relieves the defeated warrior’s pain of dying.

Hara-kiri as well as Seppuku, may also be done as a measure of redemption to redeem some guilt, or betrayal, or an act of cowardice. In such a case, both are ceremonial occasions with its own customs. If seppuku is done, then the head is usually severed by some relative or some close person. In both the cases, the person keeps his honour intact by voluntarily accepting death instead of living a dishonourable life filled with guilt and shame.
