Martial Arts and Illusions

An illusion is a misinterpretation of the sensory stimulation that is received and processed by the brain. An illusion appears to be something else than it actually is.

Understanding English video “Illusion Meaning | Definition of Illusion”:

Doron-Yitzchak Gibor video “The definition of an illusion”:

Illusion relies on senses and the brain for its interpretation. Every life-form on the planet Earth comprehends its surroundings via its respective senses. Plants can sense touch, taste, light, temperature, and humidity, besides having the ability to hear, remember, perceive shapes, and more, via its senses.

SLICE Science video “Unveiling the Hidden Senses of Plants: More Than We Ever Knew! | SLICE SCIENCE”:

Animals also interact with senses and some animals have highly developed senses.

animal fun facts video “Animal Senses – Visual Perception, Hearing, Taste, Smell – Animals for Kids – Educational Video”:

SciShow video “These Superpowered Animals Use Your 5 Senses, But Better”:

Homo Sapiens (human being) is a type of animal species and therefore, human beings are also animals, who interact with the world with their senses. The senses have sensory receptors that transmit sensory information known as sensation to the brain.

A false perspective results in a false perception, which creates an illusion.

National Geographic video “Brain Magic – The Perspective Illusion | Brain Games”:

Martial arts and illusions go hand in hand. An illusion is deceptive, and martial arts use deception in innumerable ways. Sun Tzu, a Chinese military general, strategist, philosopher, and writer, in his book “The Art of War” famously wrote, “All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

The Mentality Movement video “All warfare is based on deception – Sun Tzu”:

Illusions may be psychological, emotional, or physiological.

Psychological illusion

When the psyche is so enmeshed in false perceptions that it fails to see reality as it is, then it suffers a psychological illusion. Human societies have used psychological illusions in various ways, including manipulations.

Andrew Bustamante video “CIA Spy REVEALS Dangerous Manipulation Tactics”:

Know a Bit More video “34 Immoral Manipulation tricks exposed in 18 minutes”:

In warfare, since early times, fear and deception have been used to evoke psychological illusions. Masks and warpaints provided an illusion of fear, while camouflaging provided the illusion of deception.

@Dutyandhonour video “Why Do US Soldiers Paint Their Faces? #army #rangers #ytshorts #youtubeshorts #navy #army”:

@untoldmystry-x5q video “The Inca Army Masters of Fear #army #history #ancienthistory #weapons”:

Sometimes, a martial artist suffers a psychological illusion that is created by one’s own self. For example, in a very broad grouping, martial artists may be grouped as military martial artists and civilian martial artists. Military martial artists are trained to kill, while civilian martial artists are trained not to kill. Sometimes, a civilian martial artist may have a false belief, without any justification or proof, that one is better than a military martial artist. In such a case, the civilian martial artist creates a psychological illusion created by one’s own self. This illusion gives birth to a false inflated sense of power, which in turn makes the civilian martial artist feel almost invincible. Generally, the illusion is shattered when the civilian martial artist is humiliated, maimed, or killed by the military martial artist.

VideoMojo video “SAMURAI DUEL – SEVEN SAMURAI – AKIRA KUROSAWA”:

Psychological illusions created in psychological warfare include spreading rumours that terrify the enemy. Sometimes, innovative methods like using animals are adopted. False propaganda is a very famous method of psychological warfare. Many other methods exist, and few are shown in the following videos.

As a psychological illusion, fear is widely used in warfare in different ways. Fear is an illusion because courage shatters fear. However, in the absence of courage, or to break whatever little courage may be left, fear is very effectively used. For example, fear can be used to make enemies pay tributes as bribes for not attacking them.

@InventiveBites video “When Fear Became Gold: How the Romans Paid Off Attila the Hun”:

The Nazis used fear as a psychological weapon and an account of this is given in the diary of Anne Frank. During World War II, a teenage Jewish girl named Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Her story is shown in the following film.

Emotional illusion

When emotions are used to deceive or falsify reality, then emotional illusion takes place.

Lady Gaga video “Lady Gaga – Perfect Illusion (Official Music Video)”:

On the battlefield, emotions play a crucial role, often driving soldiers’ actions and influencing the outcome of conflicts. Emotions are often seen as vulnerabilities; however, on the battlefield, they can easily become strengths. Few ways of how emotions become strengths are given below.

—Resilience
——Hope. The hope of victory is the emotion that enable soldiers to survive adverse circumstances and create a positive outcome.
——Courage. The emotion of courage make soldiers stay focused on killing the enemy and resiliently go on fighting bravely.

@BrainyLittleMinds video “Courage in the Face of Battle | #battle #courage #victory #hope #soldiers”:

—Morale and motivation
——Patriotism. Love for one’s country motivate soldiers to continue fighting till their very last breaths.
——Camaraderie. Strong emotional bonds among soldiers foster determination and trust to support each other through thick and thin.

Denise c video “Ronald Regan Patriotic Speech”:

—Leadership
——Inspiration. Effective leaders and army commanders use the emotions of passion and empathy to inspire their troops.
——Calmness. The levels of stress are very high in any war. If the commander, although under tremendous pressure, is able to maintain composure and think clearly, then this emotion of calmness greatly helps to steady and reassure all the soldiers.

Thomas Slaughter video “Speech before deadly push through Afghanistan.”:

—Combat strategy
——Aggression. As a winning strategy, the emotion of aggression is extensively used in the military as it helps to gain an upper hand in confrontations.
——Enemy perspective. Understanding the emotions of the enemy helps in viewing a conflict from the enemy’s perspective, which can help to counteract successfully.

Physiological illusions

When the physique comprising of the senses perceives something as real that is not real, then it may be said that the physique is under a physiological illusion. Since perception is largely based on sensory stimuli, physiological illusion is sensory illusion comprising of illusions of vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. A human being has few other senses also, but these five senses are the major ones that suffer illusions.

Optical illusion (Vision illusion)

Optical illusion happens when what is seen, is not what it is. Since the eye is the leading sensory organ, there are more optical illusions used than other types of sensory illusions.

Optical illusion can also occur by smoke, which may be natural or artificial. Natural smoke as fog is extensively used in warfare. Similarly, artificial smoke curtains are also used. A smoke curtain is a thick artificial smoke screen used in warfare to hide troop movements, vehicles, and ships from enemy sight. Deployed through smoke grenades, artillery, or smoke generators, it can create confusion on the battlefield, disrupt enemy targeting and visibility while allowing strategic advances or retreats. Ninja warriors used smoke bombs as optical illusions. Sometimes, dummy armies are also used as optical illusions.

Martial movements can also create optical illusions. For example, when moving from slow to fast, or fast to slow, an optical illusion can be created, as the slow movement is deceptive and it is seen, while the fast movement is real and it is not seen.

This. video “How Do Touch Screens…Touch?”:

The sense of touch, not illusory but real touch, is a vital component of a soldier’s toolkit, enhancing both functionality and human connection in the harshest of environments. In situations where verbal communication is impossible or risky, soldiers often rely on touch signals. For example, a tap on the shoulder or a squeeze of the hand can convey messages like “move forward” or “stop.” The sense of touch is critical for operating weapons and equipment. Soldiers rely on tactile feedback to gauge the pressure needed to pull a trigger, handle explosives, or operate machinery. In low-visibility conditions, such as night-time operations or dense smoke, touch becomes essential. Soldiers use their hands to feel their way through unfamiliar terrain or to identify objects.

Medics use touch to assess injuries, locate wounds, and provide care under challenging conditions. The ability to feel for a pulse or detect swelling can be life-saving. Soldiers use their sense of touch to apply camouflage effectively, ensuring it blends with the environment. They also rely on touch to identify suitable hiding spots or materials. Modern military training often includes tactile feedback in simulations. For instance, virtual reality systems may use haptic technology to mimic the sensation of recoil or impact. In the trenches or on the battlefield, a reassuring touch from a fellow soldier can provide emotional support and strengthen bonds.

In a modern battlefield, IEDs (improvised explosive devices) like landmines are deceptively hidden in the ground. Tactile illusion takes place when a soldier unknowingly steps on a landmine and when the clicking sound of a triggering button is heard, then the soldier realizes that what felt like ground is actually the triggering metal button of a landmine. At this time, as the foot is removed, the landmine explodes and instantly kills the soldier. However, there are many types of landmines, and some mines can explode simply on contact, so lifting or not lifting the foot becomes irrelevant. Some IEDs can be detected with special detection machines, and then they can be defused by bomb squad experts.

Tactile illusions, which manipulate the sense of touch to create false perceptions, have potential applications in warfare, particularly in training and technology.

—Training simulations. Tactile illusions can enhance realism in military training. For example, haptic feedback devices might simulate the sensation of recoil from firearms or the impact of explosions, helping soldiers prepare for real-world scenarios.
—Virtual reality/Augmented reality (VR/AR). Tactile illusions can be integrated into VR/AR systems to provide soldiers with sensory feedback. This could include simulating the texture of surfaces or the weight of objects, aiding in navigation and decision-making.
—Medical applications. In battlefield medicine, tactile illusions might help medics perform procedures by simulating the feel of surgical tools or wounds, improving accuracy under challenging conditions.
—Robotics and drones. Tactile illusions could be used in controlling robotic systems, allowing operators to feel through machines. This could improve precision in tasks like bomb disposal or reconnaissance.

These applications of tactile illusions are still largely theoretical; nonetheless, advancements in haptic technology and neuroscience could make them more practical in the future.

Conclusion

Illusions can be psychological, emotional, and physiological. Illusions are not real. However, generally, when one is hungry, or sad, or in pain, then these feelings are very much real. Nonetheless, some thinkers opine that hunger, sorrow, and pain are all illusions.

Further, some thinkers state that fate or determinism is an illusion, while others state that free will is an illusion. Arguments are put forth that everything is pre-destined and human beings are merely puppets with no free will. On the other hand, it is argued that free will exists and not everything is fated. This debate of fate versus free will has been going on since early times, and it continues in modern times, albeit supported with modern theories.

Big Think video “Your brain doesn’t detect reality. It creates it. | Lisa Feldman Barrett”:

In martial arts, reality and illusion are considered as two different entities. Reality is understood as something that is non-illusory, while illusion is understood as something that is illusory. For example, if a martial artist gets injured, then the pain is real, the wound is real, the blood is real, and the healing is also real. No amount of philosophy, psychology, or quantum physics is going to convince the injured martial artist that the painful process of injury and its subsequent recovery, is merely an illusion. Thus, martial arts have used illusion and reality as separate entities to evoke fear, deception, mystery, awe, shock, and more, in order to secure victory.

Similarly, illusions and reality may be considered as separate entities in other fields also. For example, in the film “The Illusionist”, a 2006 American romantic mystery film, illusions and reality are separate, where illusions are used to arrive at a reunion, which is very much real. This highly acclaimed film tells the story of Eisenheim, a magician in turn-of-the-century Vienna, who uses illusions to reunite with his childhood love, a woman far above his social standing.
