Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): Defense against a sudden attack (Dae Boori Gong Gyok): While sitting on a couch: When sitting close

“An unexpected attack can come at any time, any place. […] An attacker will usually have the initial advantage of surprise. A well trained student of Taekwon-Do, however, who has developed an instinctive conditioned reflex should stand a fairly good chance of blocking or at least deflecting a blow.” – Gen. “The defender must know how to make use of his or her opponent’s momentum and force, while utilizing his or her dynamic and reflexive actions against momentarily undefended target.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

While sitting on a couch: When sitting close

X (attacker), Y (defender). The roles of X and Y can be reversed so that both practitioners can practice all movements.

X and Y are sitting on a couch. Y is sitting close on the right side of X.

Method 1

X: With the right back fist perform a side back strike.
Y: With an X-fist perform a high front block.
Y: With the left knee perform a middle twisting kick, while standing up.

Method 2

X: With the left arc-hand perform a high crescent strike.
Y: Lean the body backward while the left straight knife-hand performs a checking block.
Y: While standing up, with the right knee perform a turning kick.

Method 3

X: With the right elbow perform a horizontal thrust.
Y: Dodge to the right.
Y: Place both hands on the right side of the couch, and with the support of the hands, perform a high reverse hooking kick with the left foot.

Method 4

X: Move the right foot to the right side, stand up and form a sitting stance, while performing a right back elbow thrust.
Y: Lean the body backward, while performing a front block with a twin palm.
Y: With the right fist perform a crescent punch.

Method 5

X: While standing up suddenly, perform a turning kick with the left knee.
Y: Lean backward, while a twin palm performs a front block.
Y: With the left foot perform a middle snap kick.

Method 6

X: Place both hands on the left side of the couch, and with the support of the hands, perform a reverse turning kick with the right foot.
Y: Lean the body backward, while an X-fist performs a front block.
Y: With both hands grab X’s right foot and twist it clockwise.

Method 7

X: While standing up, perform a downward kick with the right foot.
Y: With a twin palm perform a rising block.
Y: With the left foot perform an inward pressing kick to X’s left knee joint.

Method 8

X: While leaning the body to the left side, perform a high twisting kick with the right foot.
Y: With a twin palm perform a high front block.
Y: With the left knife-hand perform a side strike.

Taekwon-Do is a practical art; hence it can be learnt only from an instructor. Words, diagrams and videos can help only as a reference, and they cannot replace an instructor. Expert practical guidance from an instructor is invaluable.
