Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): How to release from a grab (Jappyosul Tae): While prone

“Releasing is performed in three different ways: either by a direct attack to a vulnerable or vital spot, breaking the joint of the attacking hand or arm, or by a logical releasing motion which is usually accompanied by a counter attack.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

“The defender must know how to make use of his or her opponent’s momentum and force, while utilizing his or her dynamic and reflexive actions against momentarily undefended target.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

While prone

X (attacker), Y (defender). The roles of X and Y can be reversed so that both practitioners can practice all movements.

Situation 1

Y is lying prone with his back on the ground. X is standing on the side.

Method 1

X: Lean forward and with both hands grab the throat of Y
Y: With the right fist perform a crescent punch to the ribs of X. The throat hold of X will be released.

Method 2

X: Lean forward and with both hands grab the throat of Y
Y: With the left hand grab the left hand of X
Y: With the right hand press the elbow joint of the left hand of X, while twisting the body to the left. X will release the throat hold or the left wrist of X may be broken.

Situation 2

Y is lying prone with his back on the ground. X is sitting on top of the abdomen of Y.

Method

X: Lean forward and with both hands grab the throat of Y
Y: With both thumbs press both the armpits of X. The throat hold of X will be released.

Situation 3

Y is lying prone with his back on the ground. X is behind the face of Y and kneeling with one knee on the ground.

Method 1

X: Lean forward and with both hands grab the throat of Y
Y: With both hands hold the lapels of X, while the right knee performs an upward kick to the skull of X
Y: With the right thumb perform a crescent punch to the temple of X. The throat hold of X will be released.

Method 2
X: Lean forward and with both hands grab the throat of Y
Y: With both hands grab both the reverse knife-hands of X
Y: Twist both hands counter-clockwise, while twisting the body to the left. The throat hold of X will be released, and X will fall on the left.

Taekwon-Do is a practical art; hence it can be learnt only from an instructor. Words, diagrams and videos can help only as a reference, and they cannot replace an instructor. Expert practical guidance from an instructor is invaluable.

“Certainly the most important asset any training hall can have is a good instructor. There is no substitute for a well-trained, intelligent, perceptive and patient instructor.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.6, p.17).
