Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): How to release from a grab (Jappyosul Tae): While standing: Defense from rear choke hold

“Releasing is performed in three different ways: either by a direct attack to a vulnerable or vital spot, breaking the joint of the attacking hand or arm, or by a logical releasing motion which is usually accompanied by a counter attack.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

“The defender must know how to make use of his or her opponent’s momentum and force, while utilizing his or her dynamic and reflexive actions against momentarily undefended target.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

While standing: Defense from rear choke hold

X (attacker), Y (defender). The roles of X and Y can be reversed so that both practitioners can practice all movements.

Method 1

X: With the right hand grab the neck of X from the rear. With the left hand, hold the right hand and choke the neck of X.
Y: With the left leg heel, stamp the left instep of X. The choke will be released.

Method 2

X: With the right hand grab the neck of X from the rear. With the left hand, hold the right hand and choke the neck of X.
Y: Form a sitting stance and perform a left back elbow thrust. The choke will be released.

Method 3

X: With the right hand grab the neck of X from the rear. With the left hand, hold the right hand and choke the neck of X.
Y: With the right hand grab the right hand of x, and with the left hand grab the inner right wrist of X.
Y: Raise both hands, move the left foot to the rear, twist the body, while twisting X’s right wrist. Move the head out the choke.
Y: Continue twisting X’s right hand to break the wrist of X.

Method 4

X: With the right hand grab the neck of X from the rear. With the left hand, hold the right hand and choke the neck of X.
Y: With the right hand, grab X’s right hand, and with the left hand grab X’s right back hand.
Y: With the left hand pull X’s right hand, while moving sideways and lowering the body.
Y: With the right hand push up X’ right elbow, while lowering the head to come out of the choke.
Y: Move the left foot to the rear, and press X’s elbow with the right hand, while bending X’s wrist with the left hand. Applying further pressure with the right hand may break X’s elbow, or with the left hand may break X’s wrist.

Taekwon-Do is a practical art; hence it can be learnt only from an instructor. Words, diagrams and videos can help only as a reference, and they cannot replace an instructor. Expert practical guidance from an instructor is invaluable.

“Certainly the most important asset any training hall can have is a good instructor. There is no substitute for a well-trained, intelligent, perceptive and patient instructor.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.6, p.17).
