Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): How to release from a grab (Jappyosul Tae): While standing: Opponent grabs with both hands

How Adults Taekwondo Classes Can Help You Manage Stress

Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): How to release from a grab (Jappyosul Tae):

While standing: Opponent grabs with both hands

“Releasing is performed in three different ways: either by a direct attack to a vulnerable or vital spot, breaking the joint of the attacking hand or arm, or by a logical releasing motion which is usually accompanied by a counter attack.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

Release from a grab (Jappyosul Tae)

While standing: Opponent grabs with both hands

“Since this technique might be used against a physically strong opponent, the defender should not attempt to pull but rather to push the grabbing hand or foot at the same coordinating the body to make use of the opponent’s momentum and the instinctive pulling motion of the opponent […]” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

Few methods

Few methods featuring attack, or release, or breaking, or a combination, are presented below. For correct understanding, the guidance of an instructor is invaluable.

Notes:

—The roles of X and Y can be reversed so that both practitioners can practice all movements.

Method 1

X: From the front, with both hands, grab the right wrist of Y
Y: With the left hand, hold the right forefist of X
Y: Move the left foot forward, while pushing and twisting both hands in a clockwise direction, until the right back fist faces downward. The right hand will be released.
Y: Perform a mid-air kick, while flying away from X

Method 2

X: From the front, with both hands, grab the right wrist of Y
Y: With the left hand, grab the left back hand of X
Y: Twist both hands in a counter-clockwise direction to release the wrist
Y: Move the left foot forward and with the left hand press the left under forearm of X to break the wrist of X

Method 3

X: From the front, with both hands, grab the right wrist of Y
Y: With the left hand, hold the right forefist
Y: Move the left foot forward and press both hands downwards to release the wrist
Y: With the left fist, perform a dodging side punch while flying away from X

Method 4

X: From the front, with both hands, grab the right wrist of Y
Y: With the left hand, hold the right forefist, move forward to bend the right elbow
Y: Perform a middle side piercing kick to X, while pulling both hands in the opposite direction.

Method 5

X: From the front, with the left hand grab the right wrist of Y, and with the right hand grab the left wrist of Y
Y: Move the right foot forward, while twisting both hands in an outward direction
Y: Form a left walking stance to release the hands
Y: With the right fist perform a high vertical punch to the jaw of X
Y: With the right hand grab the right knife-hand of X and twist it clockwise to bend the wrist of X
Y: Place left hand over the right hand and push the bent wrist of X, to break the wrist of x

Method 6

X: From behind Y, with the left hand grab the left wrist of Y, and with the right hand grab the right wrist of Y
Y: Move the left foot to the rear while twisting both arms inward
Y: Perform elbow thrusts with both arms to release the wrists
Y: Turn around and perform a front kick to the groin of X

Method 7

X: From behind Y, with the left hand grab the left wrist of Y, and with the right hand grab the right wrist of Y
Y: Move the left foot to the rear and form a right walking stance, while pulling both the hands upwards to release the wrists
Y: Pivot on the left foot and form a left L-stance, while performing a side elbow thrust to the solar plexus of Y

Method 8

X: From behind Y, with the left hand grab the left wrist of Y, and with the right hand grab the right wrist of Y
Y: Move the left foot to the side, twist the upper body clockwise while raising the right hand and lowering the left hand simultaneously
Y: Turn to the side, while twisting both hands counter-clockwise to release the wrists and with the right hand grab the right knife-hand of X
Y: Twist the right knife-hand of X and with the left hand press the elbow of the right hand of X
Y: Push down to break the wrist of X

Taekwon-Do is a practical art; hence it can be learnt only from an instructor. Words, diagrams and videos can help only as a reference, and they cannot replace an instructor. Expert practical guidance from an instructor is invaluable.

“Certainly the most important asset any training hall can have is a good instructor. There is no substitute for a well-trained, intelligent, perceptive and patient instructor.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.6, p.17).
