Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): The “Come Along” hold

This technique is “not only effective for breaking an opponent’s elbow joint and wrist but can also be used to put an opponent in an untenable position without hurting him. It is, therefore, widely used by policemen as a “come-along” hold.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.311)

“The defender must know how to make use of his or her opponent’s momentum and force, while utilizing his or her dynamic and reflexive actions against momentarily undefended target.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

The “Come Along” hold

X (attacker), Y (defender). The roles of X and Y can be reversed so that both practitioners can practice all movements.

Method 1

X: With the right hand grab the left wrist of Y
Y: Raise the left hand to the left
Y: With the left hand grab the right under forearm of X, while with the right hand grab the right elbow of X
Y: Push with the left hand and pull with the right hand until the right elbow of X reaches the left armpit
Y: With the right hand press the right back hand of X.

Method 2

X: With the right hand grab the right wrist of Y
Y: Move the left foot forward and with the left hand grab the right lapel of X
Y: Raise the right hand while pulling the left hand
Y: Pull X’s right hand while twisting it counter-clockwise

Method 3

X: With the right hand grab the right wrist of Y
Y: With the left hand grab X’s right hand
Y: Move the right foot to the side and twist counter-clockwise, while raising both hands over the head
Y: Move the left foot to the rear, hold X’s elbow with the right hand, while with the left hand bend X’s right wrist

Taekwon-Do is a practical art; hence it can be learnt only from an instructor. Words, diagrams and videos can help only as a reference, and they cannot replace an instructor. Expert practical guidance from an instructor is invaluable.

“Certainly the most important asset any training hall can have is a good instructor. There is no substitute for a well-trained, intelligent, perceptive and patient instructor.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.6, p.17).
