Two-Step Sparring (Ibo Matsogi)
“The main purpose of this sparring is to acquire a mixed technique of hand and foot parts, the attacker therefore, must use both the hand and the foot alternately. It is, however, entirely optional whether the attacker uses the hand or the foot first.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5, p.91)
Similar to three-step sparring, practice may be done in two methods, namely one way method and two way method.
Two methods
2-step sparring can be practiced in two methods: one way and two way.
—One Way (Han Chok) Method:
Attack is performed only while stepping forward. Defense is performed only while stepping backward.
—Two Way (Yang Chok) Method:
Both attack and defense can be performed either stepping forward or backward.
General principles
- The distance between the sparring partners (X and Y) is generally the same as in 3-step sparring; however, it may be flexible.
- The students should familiarize equally with low, middle, and high, for attack and defense.
- Few examples are provided as guides only and they can be modified by the instructor.
Direction diagram (Bang Hyang Pyo)
X and Y stand on the line AB facing each other and both assume an attention stance.
Typical procedure of 2-step sparring
1. At the command of “Ibo Matsogi Junbi” (two-step sparring ready):
X: From an attention stance, move the right foot to A and from a right L-stance, while the forearm performs a guarding block.
Y: From an attention stance, move the left foot and form a parallel ready stance.
Both X and Y shout “Ya” as a ready signal.
2. At the command of “si jak” (commence):
—One Way (Han Chok) Method:
First step X: Move the right foot to B and form a right walking stance to B, while the right fist performs a punch.
First step Y: Move the right foot to B and form a left walking stance to A, while the left inner forearm performs a side block.
Second step X: With the left foot perform a low front snap kick to the lower abdomen.
Second step Y: Move the left foot to B and form a right walking stance to A, while an X-fist performs a pressing block.
—Two Way (Yang Chok) Method:
First step X: Move the left foot to A and form a right walking stance to B, while the right fist performs a punch.
First step Y: Move the left foot to A and form a left walking stance to A, while the left inner forearm performs a side block.
Second step X: With the right foot perform a low front snap kick to the lower abdomen.
Second step Y: With an X-fist perform a pressing block and then with the right fist perform a high punch.
3. At the command of “gumahn” (stop):
Both X and Y bring the right foot to form a parallel ready stance.
