Starting Taekwondo as an Adult

Starting Taekwondo as an Adult

At our Taekwondo classes in Brisbane, we not only get people from all walks of life but all ages too – from young kids and teenagers up to adults in their 40s and 50s.

There are a wide range of benefits you are likely to get if you join us for one of our free beginner’s classes. You’ll get a warm welcome and plenty of support.

The Benefits of Starting Taekwondo for Adults

Many adults join our classes throughout the year because they are looking for something new and more engaging than simply hitting the gym. Many experienced Taekwondo 20+ years earlier and remember the fun and challenge of training, mixed with the reality of learning defense skills so decide to give it another go.

While it’s an advantage to have some fitness when you start our classes, it’s not essential. The great news is you can start at your own pace and learn at your speed. And if you are an ex-practitioner, you’ll be surprised by how much information you’ll remember when you get back into the training environment.

1. Destress with Taekwondo

We all seem to be living busier lives lately. With hectic work practices, pressure on finances or looking after families, handling everything life throws at us can be difficult. Whatever your background, a Taekwondo class at the end of the day is a great way to mentally destress, physically stretch out your body and centre yourself to face the next day.

So, it’s not just the physical exercise and learning a new discipline that helps with this. Taekwondo is based on a complete philosophy of the self. On top of that, it’s a great community activity where you can meet other people and have a lot of fun away from all the worries of everyday life.

2. Get Fit Again

One of the reasons many adults come to us is because they want to get fit again. They’ve tried running on the treadmill or taking up sports but are looking for something different they can learn over time and improve their fitness at the same time.

When you first start in our adult taekwondo classes in Brisbane, you’ll probably find yourself using some muscles you thought had disappeared. It’s not unusual to feel a little achy after that first session. That’s because taekwondo works on the whole body, improving health and mobility in many different ways.

3. Gain Confidence, Learn a New Skill

Another thing that many people get from undertaking a martial art like Taekwondo is increased confidence. For older people, this might originate from improved balance and motility as well as developing greater strength and endurance.

We often fall into regular habits as we get older. Taekwondo classes will certainly show you that you can teach an old dog new tricks and it doesn’t matter what age you are.

4. Change Your Lifestyle

As we’re fond of saying at our taekwondo classes in Brisbane, like many other martial arts it’s not just about learning different moves, punches and kicks. Taekwondo is a lifestyle and the more you get into it the more you’ll learn about self-discipline and healthier living, including areas like improving diet and overall wellbeing.

What Can I Expect From an Adult Taekwondo Class?

We’re conscious when we run a beginner’s class that everyone is at a different level. You’re not expected to buy any specialist equipment such as a dobok (the taekwondo uniform), all you need to do is bring yourself along and wear some comfortable clothing like sweatpants and a T-shirt.

In the beginner’s class, you’ll be introduced to the philosophy of taekwondo and learn some new moves as a group. It’s important that you go along at your own pace and don’t try to compete with everyone else. You’ll soon find yourself developing that core strength and getting better over time.
