Parents often ask how old do kids need to be to take Taekwondo classes in Brisbane? The answer is that while some places around the world offer beginner classes for younger children, at Pacific International we think the age of 7 upwards is the ideal time to start for kids.
By this age, kids have a deeper understanding of the world around them and tend to be more focused on learning. They also understand the many other concepts and philosophy that are associated with martial arts.
What Are the Benefits of Taekwondo for Kids?
Of course, there are lots of sports that kids can get involved in, nowadays, including more traditional ones such as cricket, Aussie rules and rugby. The good thing about Taekwondo is that it doesn’t need much in the way of equipment.
For beginner classes, kids can come in comfortable clothing and try Taekwondo out with the first couple of lessons often free.
Not every kid wants to take part in team activities either and Taekwondo is a martial art where they can develop their skills at their own pace. Yes, there are challenges and gradings but these are all part of learning the disciplines od martial arts.
Will Taekwondo Make My Kid More Aggressive?
Some parents worry that their 7-year-old is going to get into fights and become more aggressive once they start learning a martial art like Taekwondo. While some may join because they want to carry out the actions of their favourite superhero, kids quickly learn about discipline and focus and our instructors are very experienced at dealing with younger students.
Taekwondo is a great activity for girls and boys who lack a little confidence – this is not just about learning moves but is a brilliant social activity as well. It teaches kids how to master their emotions and focus on the moment. We’ve lost count of the kids who boosted their self-esteem and confidence after taking classes.
Free Taekwondo Classes
Like many taekwondo schools in Brisbane, we like to encourage kids and parents from all walks of life to take part. That’s why we provide the first couple of classes for free. These are normally quite busy sessions because so many kids want to see what Taekwondo is all about. It’s a brilliant way to make new friends and spend an afternoon or early evening.
These beginner’s classes start with the basics and they’re about having fun while learning a few Taekwondo moves. The kids do drills and a little strength and conditioning while in a group. You don’t have to invest in any equipment such as uniforms – loose clothing is perfect. If your kid then wants to go on and learn more about Taekwondo, you can consider buying a first month offer that includes a dobok and 1 month of class training.
Kids in the group will be of different standards and some will have had a few more lessons than others. The instructor will take this into account and everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace.
These classes are all about learning the moves and there is no physical contact between the kids. Contests between kids are not allowed until they have reached a certain level and even then it is carefully controlled by the instructor.
Where Can Kids Join Taekwondo Classes in Brisbane?
Taekwondo is popular in Brisbane and there are many different classes, everywhere from Arana Hills to Dutton Park. There’s most likely a class somewhere near you in a local sports or community centre.
At Pacific International, we offer kids taekwondo lessons all through the week, with the first couple free. It gives your kid the chance to try out this martial art in safety and with qualified instructors.
