Martial Art or Martial Sport – Which Is For You?

Thinking about trying martial arts? Or are you looking for a martial sport? Is there a difference?

The terms martial arts and martial sports are often used interchangeably. Although they look alike to an onlooker, they are separate practices with different goals and viewpoints. Understanding the differences is important for anyone thinking about starting training, so they can decide which is best for them.

At its core a martial art is a complete discipline that emphasizes the development of the mind, body, and spirit of the practitioner. (‘Spirit’ refers to a person’s character, it does not have any religious meaning here). The training goes beyond being only about learning the physical techniques, and that’s due to the way in which the skills are taught. There is a level of martial arts formality combined with the sociability of group training that instils values like respect, discipline, and determination. The focus is on individual progress and self-improvement, rather than competition.

In contrast, martial sports are competitive events governed by specific rules and scoring systems. While they still require physical prowess and mental focus, and may incorporate elements of traditional martial arts, the primary goal is to outperform one’s opponents, to win matches and tournaments rather than in achieving personal development.

In short, individuals attracted to martial arts seek a journey that offers new challenges and can be life-changing, where learning Taekwondo’s physical defense skills is a way to grow qualities such as self-control, patience, and resilience. Martial sports, on the other hand, appeal to those who thrive on the adrenaline and challenge of competitive environments.

Both martial arts and martial sports offer an exciting activity that delivers valuable benefits, from enhanced fitness to mental strength. However, for anyone wanting a well-rounded personal development experience, that can boost their self-confidence and positivity, a traditional martial art may be more aligned with their goals.
