The popularity of Taekwondo has increased exponentially through the years. And lately Adult Taekwondo is right there, being pursued by women and men 18+ years of age. Naturally.
Although its influences are thousands of years old, what we recognise as Taekwondo today began after the Second World War in 1946. It found favour with students in the military and developed through the decades until the creation of the World Taekwondo Federation in 1973. Its acceptance as an Olympic Sport in 1988 (also discussed in our Taekwondo for Kids article) and a full medal sport at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, put it on a whole new level. Now, in the 21st Century it is recognised as one of the Top 5 Martial Arts globally.
At Pacific International Taekwondo we teach children, teens and adults. If you’re a parent who wants to help guide your kids to a path of self-improvement, we have the trainers, methods and experiences to help. Or perhaps you’re an adult looking to train yourself physically and mentally. There are many things you can gain from the art and discipline of Taekwondo.
So why does Adult Taekwondo score so highly with people who want to study martial arts and self-defence?
1. Self-Defence:
Taekwondo provides a great way of keeping fit and healthy and keeping excess weight at bay. At the same time, students learn to defend themselves in real world situations.
As they advance through the belt levels, Students learn to deliver fast and impactful kicks, block and deliver punches and perform jumping kicks while developing self-defence skills and building fitness.
The term “Taekwondo” signifies “the way/path/discipline/art of the foot and the fist”. Different styles of Taekwondo define it differently with slight variations. For example, “the art of kicking and punching”, or “the path of physical and mental training”, or “the discipline of self defense”, or “the way of the striking feet and fists”, and more.
All our adult Taekwondo classes in Brisbane provide practical self-defence techniques that will help you in dangerous situations where you might need to protect yourself. However, we teach people not to use what they’ve learnt to inflict violence, especially when it isn’t necessary.
“We don’t focus on Taekwondo for the competition element but for the defence and life skill benefits that it can provide.”
2. Confidence:
Through martial arts, as you’ll accomplish your goals and develop your skills, your confidence will grow steadily alongside your ability. Our goal is to enable you to discover your inner strengths.
With regular training you will find yourself becoming not only much fitter but gaining in confidence and personal discipline; this will enable you to attain goals that have previously seemed out of reach.
Taekwondo can also help you improve your confidence because it tones your muscles and helps you lose weight.
Not only will you learn about the age-old benefits of this Korean martial art but your feeling of self-worth and self-satisfaction will be boosted.
3. Physical Health:
Taekwondo builds strength, flexibility, and stamina, which together improve overall health. Regular training and practice are obviously what we are aiming for, whatever sport or martial art we choose, however the concentration on the mental aspect of Taekwondo can greatly help students become more focussed on physical health, than perhaps they have been in other pursuits.
At Pacific International Taekwondo, we focus only on the Art of Taekwondo to deliver the best fitness plan for the needs of our students. Our approach is both traditional and contemporary. By merging the two, we can give you the necessary foundations to build on as well as newer, fresher and modern ways of optimising your workout.
4.Reduced Stress
Taekwondo training provides a positive outlet for the stress and tension that build up in our everyday lives. Once again, training, movement, punching and kicking will help anyone with the stress that builds up at school or work. However, you may find yourself aided by Taekwondo’s 5 Tenets – Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self control, and Indomitable spirit.
Some find these Tenets and their physical training become part of the harmonious improvements to their life. These efforts and balance can definitely affect the stress levels incurred by everyday western life.
5.Social
While martial arts training is often a personal journey, our class environment encourages support, collaboration and trust-building.
Students work together to encourage one another and form friendships based on their common interest in Taekwondo. Students are united in a class, each training to their personal best in ways in which they can support each other.
