Military martial arts are martial arts practiced by the military. Similarly, martial arts practiced by civilians may be termed as civilian martial arts. There are a few differences between the two; however, the major difference is that in the military, the only reason for practicing martial arts is to kill and to be not killed, whereas in civilian martial arts this is not a valid reason at all. Rather, in civilian martial arts, the reasons for practicing martial arts are manifold including self-defense, physical fitness, and as a sporting activity.
There are many different types, sub-types, and styles of martial arts that are practiced all around the world. With the advent of globalization and the knowledge economy, information could be easily shared, which led to the military gaining knowledge from different types of martial arts of the entire world. New military programs were designed that incorporated elements of different martial arts and this created a fusion of techniques. Techniques that were most effective in killing with the least movement and in the shortest time, were taken and incorporated in the military programs. Due to their effectiveness in killing, such programs are ideally suited for the military, and they are forbidden for non-military personnel.
The military via its various programs incorporated numerous martial arts like Karate, Judo, Jujutsu, Jieitai Kakutōjutsu, Toshu Kakutō, Goshinkwai, Jukendo, Taekwondo, TeukGong, Krav Maga, Kapap, Muay Thai, Muay Boran, Muay Lert Rit, Sambo, Systema, Spetsnaz, Pencak Silat, Kali, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, Savate, Defendu, Kung Fu, Sanshou, Wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, Boxing, and many more. Since the martial arts taught in these programs are an amalgamation of various martial arts, they are simply called as military martial arts.
