Self-Defence (Hosin Sul): Defense against a sudden attack (Dae Boori Gong Gyok): While sitting cross-legged

“An unexpected attack can come at any time, any place. […] An attacker will usually have the initial advantage of surprise. A well trained student of Taekwon-Do, however, who has developed an instinctive conditioned reflex should stand a fairly good chance of blocking or at least deflecting a blow.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.314)

“The defender must know how to make use of his or her opponent’s momentum and force, while utilizing his or her dynamic and reflexive actions against momentarily undefended target.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5. p.278)

While sitting cross-legged

X (attacker), Y (defender). The roles of X and Y can be reversed so that both practitioners can practice all movements.

Both X and Y are sitting in front of each other in a cross-legged position.

Method 1

X: With the right flat fingertip perform a high thrust to the eyes of Y.
Y: With the left inner forearm perform an inside block, while with the right flat fingertip perform a high thrust to the eyes of X.

Method 2

X: With the right flat fingertip perform a high thrust to the eyes of Y.
Y: With the left outer forearm perform an outside block, while the right flat fingertip performs a high thrust.

Method 3

X: With the right flat fingertip perform a high thrust to the eyes of Y.
Y: Dodge to the left rear side and place both hands on the ground of left rear side.
Y: With both hands support the body and with the right foot perform a middle side piercing kick to the jaw of X.

Method 4

X: With the right flat fingertip perform a high inward cross-cut.
Y: Y: Dodge to the right rear side and place both hands on the ground of right rear side.
Y: With both hands support the body and with the left foot perform a middle side piercing snap kick to the chest of X.

Method 5

X: With the right flat fingertip perform a high outward cross-cut.
Y: Dodge to the rear and place both hands on the ground on the back.
Y: With both hands support the body and with the right foot perform a high front snap kick to the jaw of X.

Method 6

X: With the right fist perform a high punch.
Y: Dodge to the left, place both hands on the left side ground, and supporting the body with the hands perform a reverse hooking kick with the right foot.

Method 7

X: With the left fist perform a high punch.
Y: Dodge to any side or to the rear, and follow method 3 or 4 or 5 or 6.

Method 8

X: Raise the hips, bend forward and sit on the knees, while with both hands press downwards the knees of Y, and with the forehead attack the face of Y.
Y: With the left hand hit the right elbow joint of X so that it bends, while the right hand back fist performs a front strike to the forehead of X.

Method 9

X: Place both hands on the rear and with the hands supporting the body, perform a middle front snap kick with the right foot.
Y: With an X-fist perform a front block, or with the right palm perform a hooking block, or with the left outer forearm perform a front block, or with the inner forearms perform a parallel block; then immediately grab the foot of X and twist it clockwise.

Taekwon-Do is a practical art; hence it can be learnt only from an instructor. Words, diagrams and videos can help only as a reference, and they cannot replace an instructor. Expert practical guidance from an instructor is invaluable.

“Certainly the most important asset any training hall can have is a good instructor. There is no substitute for a well-trained, intelligent, perceptive and patient instructor.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.6, p.17).
