In recent years Taekwondo has developed an image as being for kids, but there are many benefits of taekwondo for adults. The traditional way of instructing tkd instils strong defense skills as well as a sense of empowerment. These are powerful things to possess or learn at any age.
At our Taekwondo for Adults classes Brisbane, we not only get people from all walks of life but all ages too – from young kids and teenagers right up to seniors. That includes people who are in the 30s 40s and 50s.
From our point of view, Taekwondo for adults classes are even more beneficial than the tkd classes for kids.
There are a wide range of benefits you are likely to get if you join us for one of our free taekwondo for beginner adults classes. And, if you’re over a certain age, you’ll get a warm welcome and lots of support.
Starting Tkd for Adults
The benefits of doing tkd late in life
Many adult men and women take taekwondo for adults classes because they are looking for something new and engaging than simply hitting the gym. There’s a focus and a sense of achievement beyond the nice image in the mirror.
While it’s good to have a certain level of fitness when you start our classes, you don’t have to be ‘super fit’. The great news is you can start at your own pace and learn at your speed.
1. De-stress with Taekwondo
We all seem to be living more stressful lives at the moment. With hectic work practices, pressure on finances or looking after families, handling everything life throws at us can be difficult. Whatever your background, taekwondo for adults is a great way to learn how to de-stress and centre yourself.
It’s not just the physical exercise and learning a new discipline that helps. Taekwondo is based on a complete philosophy of the self. On top of that, it’s a great community activity where you can meet other people and have a lot of fun away from all the worries of everyday life.
2. Get Fit … Again
One of the reasons many older adults do taekwondo for adults classes is because they want to get fit. Again. They’ve tried running the treadmill or taking up sports but are looking for something different they can learn over time while improving their general fitness.
When you first do a taekwondo for adults class in Brisbane, you’ll probably find yourself using some muscles you thought had disappeared. It’s not unusual to feel a little achy after that first session. That’s because taekwondo works on the whole body, improving health and mobility in many different ways.
3. Gain Confidence, Learn a New Skill
Another thing that many people get from undertaking a martial art like Taekwondo later in life is increased confidence. For older people, this might manifest as improved balance and motility as you do tkd classes – alongside developing greater strength and endurance.
We often fall into regular habits as we get older. Taekwondo classes will certainly show you that you can teach an old dog new tricks and it doesn’t matter what age you are.
4. Change Your Lifestyle
As we’re fond of saying at our taekwondo for adults classes here in Brisbane – like many other martial arts, it’s not just about learning different moves, punches and kicks. Taekwondo is a lifestyle and the more you get into it the more you’ll learn about self-discipline and healthier living, including areas like improving diet and overall wellbeing.
What Can I Expect From a Taekwondo class?
We’re conscious when we run a beginner’s class that everyone is at a different level. You’re not expected to buy specialist equipment such as a dobok (the taekwondo uniform pictured right), all you need to do is bring yourself along and wear some comfortable clothing like sweatpants and a T-shirt.
In the beginner’s class, you’ll be introduced to the philosophy of taekwondo and learn some new moves as a group. It’s important that you go along at your own pace and don’t try to compete with everyone else. You’ll soon find yourself developing that core strength and getting better over time.
