We get many adults from all walks of life coming to our adult Taekwondo classes. While a certain level of fitness is important if you want to get the most out of this amazing martial art, everyone starts from a different base.
Your first Taekwondo class is about learning a few basic moves rather than a full-on exercise class. Unlike an aerobics session, there’s no pressure put on trying to keep up with the rest of the class and the instructor.
You can go at your own pace and you’ll get support from everyone around you. What you’ll find if you decide to take more Taekwondo classes is that your fitness will improve naturally over time.
What Can I Do to Prepare?
Taekwondo has several different kicks and moves and you can begin practising these almost immediately you start. Some strength and conditioning exercises are also included in your first adult Taekwondo classes and these are normally done in a group, where you’ll be with people of a similar level.
The key is not to become disheartened if you find it challenging, simply go at your own speed and you’ll find, over time your performance improves. If you get out of breath and find yourself struggling a little, simply stop for a few moments until you are ready to continue.
If you have been fairly sedentary and are quite unfit, doing some simple exercise beforehand can help prepare you better for our Taekwondo classes.
For some, this might mean going for a few brisk walks to get that old heart rate up. There are also some great fitness videos on sites like YouTube which are aimed at people of different levels. Our advice is to do a bit of exercise that meets your ability and don’t try to push yourself too much.
Will I Feel Stiff Afterwards?
Taekwondo practise means you’ll be using some muscles that you might not have used for a while. That’s the same for any sport. It’s not unusual for newbies to feel aches and pains the next day but these generally fade in a short time. If you do experience stiffness, a hot bath or shower can help ease the pain a little.
As you become more experienced, you’ll find this becomes less and less of an issue, unless you do a very intensive training session.
Will Taekwondo Help Me Get Fit?
The short answer is, yes. If you decide to continue with adult taekwondo classes, you will certainly find yourself becoming fitter.
For a start, a martial art like this is a lot more fun than some other exercise regimes and it’s quite social too. Because people enjoy it, they tend to keep the classes up and that helps their motivation. It also has a knock-on effect on fitness levels.
Taekwondo, once you get deeper into it, isn’t just about learning the moves and is a way of life for many. Lots of our students also find that they start doing things like changing their diet and living more healthily in general. Taekwondo teaches you discipline and a sense of overall calm. It’s also a great stress buster if you feel things are getting on top of you.
