Taekwondo for confidence

SEMI-FREE SPARRING (Panjayu Taeryon/ Ban Jayu Matsogi)

Usually, after three-step, two-step, and one-step sparring, a practitioner proceeds to semi-free sparring (Ban Jayu Matsogi).

“Semi-free sparring is the last stage before the student enters into a free sparring, though it can be exercised at all levels as well.” – Gen. Choi Hong Hi (Vol.5, p.225)

Direction diagram (Bang Hyang Pyo)

1-Step Sparring
X and Y stand on the line AB facing each other and both assume a parallel ready stance.

Typical procedure of semi-free sparring

The distance between x and Y, techniques and tools of defense and attack used, and the number of steps taken are entirely optional. However, for a brief duration, only one series of motions of attack and defense are exchanged.

X and Y face each other in a parallel ready stance.

1. At the command of “Ban Jayu Matsogi Junbi” (semi-free sparring ready):

X and Y take a left L-stance or a right L-stance, while the forearm or knife-hand performs a guarding block, and both shout “Ya” as a ready signal.

2. At the command of “si jak” (commence):

X and Y exchange attack and defense techniques.

3. At the command of “gumahn” (stop):

Both X and Y assume a parallel ready stance.
